Modern Foreign Languages

Our curriculum is based on the conviction that all learners studying French and/or German will develop their desire and ability to communicate with and understand speakers in a variety of contexts and a variety of purposes.

The study of French and/or German will broaden all students’ horizons, develop cultural knowledge and understanding and foster transferrable skills such as confidence, communication, problem solving and creativity across a range of topics.

The Modern Foreign Languages curriculum prepares all students so that they can express themselves articulately in written and spoken language. Our curriculum is taught across 3 themes: 1 – Identity & culture, 2 – Local, national, international and global areas of interest, 3 – Current and future study and employment.

Students have 3 hours of languages each week. Students are able to take the Dual-linguist pathway at Long Field. For this pathway, students have alternate weeks of 2 lessons French, 1 lesson German. Single linguists have 3 lessons of French or 3 lessons of German. In Key Stage 4, students have 3 hours each week, split into a double lesson and a single.

Our curriculum also aims to provide all learners with a solid foundation on which to prepare them for future language learning and their pathway to Post 16, University and Careers.
